Measure It Yourself:
Ordering blinds from your own measurements is a real advantage in some cases, especially when remoteness is a problem or our free measure and quote service just does not fit in with your plans.
Blinds can be quoted over the internet based on your measurements and your choice of product and fabrics with payment by credit card or internet banking. The blinds can then be couriered to you for you to install.
How To Measure
Given below are some basic instructions on how to measure. You will need to be aware of the following points:
- All measurements must be given in writing.
- We take no responsibility for blinds not fitting when made to supplied sizes. All remakes will be charged to the customer.
- All sizes given must be tight sizes as the factory takes off clearance deductions.
- All blinds made from customer supplied sizes are to be fitted by the customer. We recommend picking up your blinds. This will enable us to give some installation tips.
- Full payment is required before despatch or on pickup.
- Please note that when blinds are installed by yourself the Total Look Blinds guarantee is made null and void. This is necessary as a poor installation job will affect the performance and longevity of the blinds.
We strongly recommend you use our free measure and quote service. This removes the responsibility of getting it right from you to us. If you would like some more information or a measure and quote? Fill in our enquiry form here.
Basic Measuring Instructions:
Measurement for blinds falls into four categories, inside fit, outside fit, three dimensional fit and extended bracket fit. In all cases follow the instructions given and do not make any further deductions as all clearances and special deductions are performed by the computer that turns your measurements into cutting sizes for the factory.
1) Inside fit:
- Inside fit represents the best fit. Keeping all the blind inside the window frame makes for a tidy job and gives the customer maximum wall space. It is also makes the installation quicker and easier.
- There will be occasions when inside fit is not practical. This is caused by the window frame not having enough room to hold the blind without the blind hitting something such as handles. In the case of sliding doors the aluminium section used is so large that the door frame is reduced to 20mm, not allowing any room for vertical blind fabric to turn.
- Measure the width in three places, at the head, half way down and at the sill. Use the smallest dimension as the width.
- Measure the drop in three places, at the left side, at the middle and at the right side. Take the smallest dimension as the drop.
2) Outside fit:
- To be able to do an outside fit check there is enough wall space either side of the blind. The blind should overlap either side of the architrave by at least 200mm. If the blind is a vertical then the blind must overhang the end where the fabric collects by enough to have the fabric off the window. Refer to fabric stacking.
- Only one measurement need be taken for the width.
- The blind can either be fitted above the architrave or onto the architrave. If there is no architrave (the window frame is grooved to take the jib) then the blind can only be fitted above the window frame.
- Be careful when fitting onto the architrave as the architrave may split. Always drill a clearance hole for the screw.
- The drop will need to be measured in three places, the two sides and middle. Allow for any flooring. If installing above the architrave locate where the bottom of the bracket will be and add 40mm for vertical blinds, 60mm for timber blinds and 50mm venetians and 30mm for 25mm venetians to this to allow for the bracket. No addition is necessary for Holland and Sunscreen blinds. If the installation is onto the architrave take the measurement from the top of the architrave. The drop should be measured to 50mm below the sill architrave. Allow for the gap between the lintel and top window frame, normally 25mm otherwise the screws will only go into jib.
3) Extended bracket fit:
- Extended bracket fit is used when a blind is measured as inside fit but it has to be moved out further to miss handles or to enable the fabric to turn. Only use this fit when an outside fit solution is not practical or not wanted by the customer. The problem with extended bracket fit is that when an inside fit is moved away from the window gaps appear around the side of the blind. This causes loss of privacy and lets in light.
- Measurement is the same as for inside fit. However it is prudent to add 50mm to the width to help with cover. Make sure that the blind is clear of the window frame before adding to the width.
- In extreme cases extended bracket fit can be applied to outside fit measure. Seek advice before doing this.
4) Three dimensional fit
Due to the complexity of measuring three dimensional windows we do not want customers to provide there own measurements. To do this successfully it is necessary to visit the local sales outlet for training.
Select Colour Schemes:
This is difficult to do without physically inspecting a range of colours or fabric textures. Most blinds ordered this way are done so with cost being the most important consideration so when items are priced over the internet they are priced using the most cost effective components to do the job required.
You will need to have made a choice on blind type i.e. Venetian, Timber, Holland etc. Once you have made this choice samples of fabrics or component colours can be sent to you for consideration. You will be charged for courier costs. The price of the blind varies greatly with fabric and colour choices. If your choice varies from the originally priced one the your will be re quoted.
We strongly recommend you use our free measure and quote service. Our trained consultants can guide you through the colour choice process. However the final choice rest with you.
